He will most likely get sacked right after this disaster. Personally I think he messed up big time twith his tactics for this game... he changed the formation and expects the players to adapt in just a week.. that being said the players have to take some of the blame too. England was simply not up to standard.

What a wonderful pass from Becks. I thought he would save them again like against Greece in 2002 world cup qualifiers. When you leave such a player on the bench, then someone has to question your skills McClaren. I always thought Peter Crouch will perfom well with Becks in the line up (saw his goals from Beckham set pieces against Austria freindly and Macadonia)

Steve McClaren: What a disaster!!!. How can he change goalkeepers for such an important match. Apparently, he didn't learn from Briana Scurry's contraversial change for Hope Solo in the recent Women world cup semi-finals. I am 100% sure he will be axed, it is just a matter of time. May be they will get Jose Mourinho, the special one to prepare them fro South Africa 2010.

I know he was unlucky to miss Owen (another mistake by playing in unnecessary freindly), Rooney,Terry, Rio Ferdinand etc, but you can excuse the poor performance especially in the first 15 minutes.

We Simply were out played by a side full of desire and ability !! I've never seen such a lack lustre display from England in a crucial match. The midfield were lazy and 'not bothered'- They acted like the overpriced primadonnas they've been called, hardly ever running in for tackles or making space (J Cole/Phillips the exceptions. It was like they should recieve the ball without any effort and I don't want to hurt myself in a tackle attitude. Wayne bridge had a bad game and was done on several occassions. Why did we have a 5 man midfield - Cos Mac didn't have the balls to put Lampard on the bench. We needed a 2 man strike like the 2nd half. Becks was good and made a difference - Crotia backed off and we equalised then We say we've got or draw , Now sit back ???? We got what we Deserved just cos we got the most expensive league and most paid players doesn't mean their the best, just overvalued !!

With all do respect to everyone hating Scott Carson, if I were McClaren, I would have done the same thing, but MUCH MUCH MUCH earlier, like after the Croatia away match or as late as the after the Germany friendly. You expect a goalie who only has his 3rd cap to keep his nerves together in the biggest game in England's fantastic:)) history?! This was a guy who should have had at least 3 or 4 more caps under his belt.

With that said, as everyone says, McClaren is such a duechebag. I didn't listen to 606, but let me guess, McClaren pulled another George Bush, saying "we tried hard", "endaevor", etc. What a ******!!!

As a Russian, I'm not happy with the way Russia qualified but have to thank Croatia for playing the way they always play, to win. Croatians deserve credit for being a better team than England and I think that they are one of the best teams in Europe. I don't know why they haven't won a World Cup yet but they are consistently good. I just hope Russian doesn't play them again until the final in Euro 2008.

The English style is old fashioned and inflexible and has been for years. The Croatian team have a fluid passing game with plenty of pace to get in behind square defences. All the Croatian goals were helped by hopeless defensive blunders, ball watching, poor marking and spectacular goalie fumbles. (Anybody remember the Aus v Croat world cup game, there was a carbon copy fumble in that game too, must be a Croatian speciality!) To be serious though Crouch is no solo striker is he?, he's not fast enough, don't get me wrong I think he's phenomenal, his take down and execution of his goal had quality, all this talk about his awkwardness is facile, look at his play, he has good foot skills and touch. Beckham shined from his position and showed fight, but he's not a percentage player, he can't win/keep/link play he's a Hollywood pass guy and he's one of the best at it no doubt. The midfield of England were just downright confused, confused about their responsibilities either going forward or defending, they couldn't even detect that they were on the defensive in the first 20 mins, holes everywhere, a lack of leadership on the pitch. But the Croatian defense have nothing to fear from any one striker team, they are too good for that, they were in control of the match and they looked like they were enjoying themselves, they feared nothing, that's what good morale can do for you. It's time for some more foreign knowhow England, Hiddink, Jose, Solari, bring back Erikkson, you know he's one of the best managers in the world don't you? Croatia, great team, come to Wembley and outplay the hosts, top quality. England not even a team, must rebuild now from the ground up, nothing sacred, everything up for grabs, and sincerely best of luck in that endeavor.

not only were the choices of phillips over beckham, especially with a stirker like crouch who is quite apt at scoring from crosses, and carson over the more experienced robinson unforgiveable, but also Mcclaren's leaving ashley cole on the bench for wayne bridge (especially after his 1st half performance) and his exclusion of hargreaves, the only player other than beckham to play with some semblance of desire during the world cup, for the often lackluster lampard were inexcusable. true, lamps scored the penalty; but it's a penalty, you're supposed to score. however, our criticism of Mcclaren and cries for him to be sacked won't get england a spot in austria and switzerland. and, as england fans have become accustomed to saying, there's always next time.

ah well even if England goes through they'll get knocked out the next stage. It's funny how England can have one of the most exciting league and yet they can't achieve anything on international level.

btw, I think the whole team was playing bad (except for becks maybe) I was watching the game during the second half,was it just me or did you notice England kept attacking from the left side (the Joe Cole side) instead of the right side (becks)..I mean..whyyy..whyyy ??? .. you have peter crouch up front..why the **** would you go from the left??

And the lesson that the English team ALWAYS fail to learn..don't sit back when you only have 1 goal cushion..it happened llots of time.

Limiting foreign players will further degrade english talent. If you impose a limit, the english players who doesn't deserve a chance to be in the squad for BPL; thus, lowering the quality of english talent. Also, it wasn't the lack of talent that knocked england out of qualification. It was bad luck such as injuries, football culture, and poor managing. When I mean football culture, I am pointing out to the fact that england plays an outdated style of football. Just look at all the major tournaments england had participated in recent years. Lot of guts, but no style, and all long ball attacks. You need to keep the possession of the ball and create openings. Sorry but england are years away from getting players like cesc, roman, and these type of playmakers in the middle. and no, carrick doesn't cut it. not good enough.

England deserve what they get – how many passing moves did you see. What about the 2nd half tactics – LONG BALL. That’s old and the team and manager should be ashamed. I don’t ever want to hear about an England player being world class until they can prove it. Croatia were toying with England all through the match even when it was 2-2 they still carried on playing football they way it should be played – Pass and Move, use awareness and be flexible to cover other positions. It was a good thing because we should change the coaching system - from the youth teams to senior level

By the way Arsenal have a few English players - even more in the youth team - And they are being taught the right way to play football

I agree that Croatia plays better than other European powers because they have a skill and passion that comes from more than just "schools" and developement programs. They have "street" smart skills and they play with a style and grace that is unlike Europe and more like South America. Remember that the former Yugoslavia was called the "Brazil" of Europe in terms of football. I think most of the best players then were Croatian with a few Serbs here and there. Now the rest of the world knows, if they know anything about football, that Croatian players play well and when you play Croatia you are the underdog. Only Italy can beat them because the Italians play a boring defensive style that prevents attacking players from finding space behind the lines. Italy will win Euro 2008.

Croatia won this game and the group because they played great, positive, attacking football. England panicked, led into it by McLaren. Beckham should have started in order to feed Crouch who was decent.

I think england need to train together more because they are mediocre year after year and only play to their potential once in a while. Unfortunately, they totally deserved what they got.

How did England expect to win a serious match w/o any midfield possession? Barry had a few mistakes in the first half, but at least he was doing some nice link work with Gerrard. W/o a serious midfield, Beckham and Cole are going to be mostly useless on the wings. They needed closer support, and all they got were inaccurate 30+ yard bombs for service. Lampard staying in the game was inexcusable. SWP played well, but his style does not suit Crouch. You guys were actually better in the first half. Your defenders just played badly, and you needed a defensive midfielder in Lampard's place.

mcclaren was **** but it wasnt all his fault. if paul was playing and made that mistake, someone somewhere gonna blame him for letting paul playing for such an important game. isnt it we got some other guy like carson or watever. the media, all of the players are to blame. as usual most british will point their fingers on one scapegoat and curse him to ****. as they did before on becks during wc1998 becasue it was hard for them to swallow that, as the matter of fact they suck at football. until you brits actually admit that fact and reshuffle your nation squad and the bloody FA board, god bless.

:) 40 years of nothing, England needs some Italian/German players to become citizens. World Cup, champions league, in the European arena, this is now an Italian sport.

Football is a game or results, there is no excuse at this level for not achieving. Would have beens do not matter and would never make a valid argument. Beckham showed he still has it, but the quality of English players is not high, they are simply overrated because they have the best medi in the game, publicity but not quality.

i still think England played better in the first half. at least there was some good attacking play and possession in Croatia's half. the two goals in the second half came completely against the run of play. one was on a bad penalty call. the second was on a broken play that allowed Beckham to get free on the right with space (still a brilliant cross and score though). other than that, England was back on their heels and allowing Croatia time and space to possess and direct play. even Bent's chance came on a random long ball. it looked like the kind of soccer we played in America as kids. yeah, England looked that bad.

Croatia truly deserved to win this game..On the other hand, england deserved to be out of the Euro. To be frank, they have great players but a **** team..And definitely calling them money minting machines won't be inappropriate. Anyway I hope England learns from this, and the new coach tries to build up a great team first, not caring about the status of the players.

Crotia are a good team but have never won a major tournament ever. Italy has won many tournaments. I'm not saying Croatia can't beat Italy. Of course any team can beat anyone on a given day but the facts are that Italians are very good and getting results when they need it. They have alway lost or tied teams "weaker" than they are and then come back in the later rounds to win the trophy. I don't like the way they play though. I would prefer that a team like Croatia wins because they play a more attractive style. However, the most attractive team doesn't always win. England has neither attractive style nor strategy, so they lose all the time because they can't win when it matters. Euro 2008 will be interesting to watch and if Croatia or any team that plays good attacking football wins, I will be happy.

Wrong. Italy and Croatia played 5 times - Croats won 3 games, with 1 draw (Split 1995, EURO qualifying) and 1 victory for Italy. And that victory was in 1942. :d

Well, it seems I was wrong too. There were actually 6 games (including that obscure '42 axis-friendly match), with 2 draws indeed. The second one was a goalless friendly match in Zagreb in 1999.

I agree that Croatia plays better than other European powers because they have a skill and passion that comes from more than just "schools" and developement programs. They have "street" smart skills and they play with a style and grace that is unlike Europe and more like South America. Remember that the former Yugoslavia was called the "Brazil" of Europe in terms of football. I think most of the best players then were Croatian with a few Serbs here and there.
