    Zhund0r are your serious are jus biased? Ronaldo got fouled enough times with no calls because of his history of diving. The Germans are dirty players, both goals had push offs including the Podolski one where he pushed off of Bosingwa to get space. The Ballack one was way worst. Went foward? He was going for the ball and Ballack both arms fully stretched pushed him away from the play leaving him wide open. It was so obvious this ref was pretty biased. 2 games in a row Portugal looses due to bad calls from a ref. These refs have too much pull in these big games, instant replays should be brought in to stop this fuckery by the refs.

    JJLS I was watching the quarterfinal of Euro 2008, the one between Portugal and Germany...yea....that one......the one where Ronaldo dived and playacted....theres no way around it. The showed that over and over and there was nothing in it. World Player of the year? More like an Oscar for best breakthrough performance by an ACTOR.

    Yes, in the end the Germans were the better team ... the defending/marking of Portugal was lousy for lack of a better word. The Germans just seemed more hungry, so kudos to them. And about the apparent "acting" ... come on people, please open ur eyes n mind, even if it's just a little bit. There were TWO incidents that happened there ... he initially got fouled and hit the ground. That is when they show u the clip where he looks around for the ref, wondering why there was no call. Right after this part, you gotta LOOK to the far right, it's hard to see plainly cuz they have it zoomed in, but you see enough that right after that pause where he looks up for the ref ... u see a GERMAN player pass right when Cristiano's looking up. As Cristiano is looking up, the GERMAN player CLEARLY steps on his foot. Don't be ignorant, and look a the replays carefully. The german player even goes to him and checks if he's arite by grabbing Cristiano's arm/shoulder, as a gesture of respect to see if he's alright, while Cristiano's grimacing in pain. I don't know about those of you, but when someone steps on ur foot like that, that hurts ... especially if it's by a player like those of the German squad. Those are big guys, and a being stomped on ur foot, while ur unaware, by cleets ... that stuff is no walk in the park. It's so easy to say that all that hate cuz I must admit, Cristiano's hasn't exactly had the best track record wen it comes to diving, but he definitely has gotten ALOT better, and for those that actually really love and know the game, would give Cristiano that respect, that the he has cut that part of his game drastically. It doesn't help that he's one of those players that many love to hate, and is always surrounded by controversy.     GD, maybe they showed a different angle where ever it is you saw it. But they showed us only one angle of the incident and it looked like he playacted. If you have a link to the incident from an angle where it shows that German defender stepping on his foot, please allow me to see it. I saw German player pass by, but from my angle it didnt look like Ronaldo's foot was stepped on. Thanks.

    Germany deserved the win, not because ronaldo sucks or portuguese are arrogant (both isn't true), they won because they had an absolute great tactic with zwo number 6 in front of the defense and a more offensive ballack. so they got more creative in the offense...the two sixer made it really hard for portugal to start their amazing short-pass-play (don't know if it's written right^^)

    Germany beat them in the air. Andy Gray made a note of this before the match began. He mentioned the fact that the Portuguese play beautiful football, but when things get tough and gritty, do they have what it takes to grind one out? I thought both sides played well enough, but Germany knicked it in the end.

    GD is right. I was watching the game and at first I thought it was another one of Ronaldo's skills, but then they showed it again at a different angle for a brief moment and i actually saw a German player stepped over Ronaldo's foot. Now i wouldn't say it is not painful, but i wouldn't call it stomp either. There was contact, but not a stomp. So i guess Ronaldo is innocent this time, rare right?

    First, Germany played better. Portugal were able to string together a few good chances, but overall, the game was dominated by the Germans.

    Second, you can't seriously expect to be able to complain about every little push and shove. This isn't fucking basketball or some shit, it's football we're talking about here. Ballack's "push" was something that happens all the time, and you need to get over it.

    Third, maybe Ronaldo did get his foot stepped on, but he still acted like a pussy. That is exactly why he isn't the "best player in the world." He needs to grow up before he deserves that title.

    what are we talking ratings? First off most Austrians don't like the Germans or taking over their country, which is why they predominantly root for oranje (another German rival). Portugal have the world's current most famous player on their team in Ronaldo, if anything this is a ratings loss, Germany doesn't have anyone close to that popularity.
    At any rate Germany won. I would have preferred to see Portugal win, but they didn't make the most of their chances and Germany exploited some weak Portuguese D at times and took advantage of their chances.
    Well played by two world class teams regardless of any small controversies.
    Seriously ferreira has to hold his ground better, he can't get pushed out of the way like that.
    It makes me wonder how many football league games some people commenting watch, this shit happens all the time with these little push offs - it rarely gets called.

    the ref did DID have some inconsistent calls in the German's favor, which could have leveled the score line to 2-2. even more, the portugeuse had great ball work and team play during many parts of the match which could question the german victory even more. however, the germans dominated the air battles and took advantage of awful set piece defending and lack of desire from some of portugal's players. paulo and ronnie's coverage on two of the goals was kids stuff. the german's took advantage of the situation and won, plain and simple. if it wasn't ballack's goal that did them in, it would've come from somewhere else eventually, so the refs can't be to blame.

    as for the whole ronaldo being a bitch thing... sorry, but not this match. he was played hard and didn't get any calls, rarely looked for them. there was one instance he appeared to be writing in pretend pain, however, if you look again, he is fouled and looks towards the referee for a split second before the german defender walks on his ankle while getting up. might not have been that bad but at least deserved the refs attention... could have even hurt... maybe? whatever the case may be, CR has developed hismself so that he no longer needs to look to the ref to improve his game. his ball skill and goal count more these past seasons morethan speak for itself, whether you love the guy or hate him. i guess people are still hung up on his "younger" days of excessive diving and flailing. i wish people could appreciate the level of football he gives to us, even if you think he's a total wanker

    I agree, in that tho it is dissappointing that Portugal are out, it is also unnecessary to lash out racial slurs (Nazis, etc.). First, it's just ignorant to do so, and second, it is not effective at all, if ur trying to prove a point. If anything, it just gives them (those you are debating/arguing wit) more ammunition and proof to say how wrong and or ridiculous your points are, because of how you are reacting. So yes, you may have a very good point(s)/arguements, and like many of us who were hoping that Portugal would come of as the victors, may be quite or very dissapointed. But that does not mean or give anybody or any of us the right to start throwing out racial slurs/innuendos, etc. It would just make the person throwing those slurs look silly, especially if they're trying to voice out an argument, or a point/idea/ a truth, whatever. So yes, no need to get all reckless with the words. Love the FORCA PORTUGAL, but I must admit, the Germans deserved that one, they just showed how much hungrier they were for the win, than the Portuguese. So once again, kudos to the German lads. Let's just hope that if Portugal meet Germany again in the near future (i.e. WC2010) that Portugal can pull out an even better effort than what they showed today, especially in defending.

    And oh, well put ARSEGUNS, well put ... except I would end it with "oh, go SPAIN." lol. But yes, well said.

    P.S. And yes, they should've definitely put in Nani for Simao ... Nani, was 1 of, if not the best player on the pitch for Portugal. Simao, in my opinion is just way too reckless. Either Nani, or Quaresma would've been good replacements. Maybe we would've seen a much different end ... but I guess we'll never know.

    Yeah, that play with Ronaldo where he started writhing a few seconds later was weird. But after a few replays, I saw the German player step on his ankle, and I don't know how many of you have had a 6 foot something big guy step on your ankle with football cleats, but holy hell that hurts. I've played football before and being stepped on is ridiculously painful because the entire weight of the player is distributed over very few points, which makes even a casual step on an ankle extremely painful

    It's simple. You're getting 200+ pounds of German footballer over a small area. Anything short of marshmellow studs would be very painful. And hell, even without studs, being stepped on by a big athletic guy would be painful regardless. You're ankle isn't designed to take that much weight on it's side. (See what a little bit of rational thinking and research can do? So much blind fury these days, my God.)

    Beyond that, I was relatively disappointed at Ronaldo's play though. Definitely not up to form. Good luck to Germany in the rest of the tournament, and good luck to Portugal in the future.

    Why do teams treat the last match of the group as a friendly if they are already through? For me this is an own goal - the loose momentum - take a while to get going in the knock out match and find themselves 2-0 down before they know it. 8 changes were made for the Swiss game. Last night same team that started against Turkey. Scolari had no doubts as for his starting 11. Imagine if they had played a full strength team against the Swiss and won it comfortable. 100% record in the group phase is a great platform for the knock out phase. After winning their last game (albeit a poor performance against Austria) Germany are full of running and confidence. By playing your 2nd XI and losing to a team barely in the world's top 100, Scolari made a hard match against Germany even harder.

    After watching the match highlight from the local tv here (Aussie), now I would like to humbly retract my statement about the foul on Ronaldo. The replay shows that he does not dive or overreact, the replay on tv here clearly shown that after Ronaldo being tackled, his foot was tripped by one of the Germany players, and yes it is indeed hurt if you guys ever experienced it. So it's not a fake screaming of pain, really.

    I'm sorry but that is bull! The germans use brute force? The german team is one of the fairest teams you will ever see. Philipp Lahm is one of the best defenders in the world and hardly ever commits a foul, same for Mertesacker, same for Metzelder and so on and so fourth.
    Germany clearly dominated the first half and if any goal was lucky than it was Nuno Gomezs goal. Or are you trying to tell me that that was planed? No it was pure luck. And that little push by Ballack, cmon!? Thats tottaly normal, happens at every corner and every freekick. How about Pepes foul against Klose? Where he bodychecked him and hit him in the face and didn't get a card.     Germany was high class. much a better side that played brilliant footbal. look at the first goal. double one twos, and a lightning run from schweinsteiger from midfield. it isn podolski's mistake to push away the defender its keeping him out of his way. this is football.
    Ronaldo choked because of the pressure put on him. He did not mark Klose when he is supposed to do so. He is a midfielder. Which means he should be helping in defending too. Why is he not marking Klose then? Did he forget how good klose is in air? Ronaldo made a mistake in that game, a mistake that cost Portugal. Yes, i watched the whole game, i saw how he was stepped on. however it was overeaction. it was painful, but not painful to tt extend. he is making a fool out of himself really.
    And the third goal of Germany was a good goal. pushing and shoving is soccer. it was just a slight nudge, not really a big push or ferreira would have fall given that he is already preparing to jump. ballack just gave him a slight nidge to open up space for himself. it was a good goal.
    portugal had many chances but could not make the most out of them. at the end of the day, no one will remember how many miss chances they have, but how many goals they scored.=)

    Why scolari stuck with simao...i have no idea. Simao had no reply for the onslaught that was Podolski. If someone like Nani or even quaresma had been on they could have been more aggresive with Podolski and maybe prevented the first goal and a few runs down the left flank.

    Kudos to the Germans for an outstanding match, they wre effecient in their delivery, played to their strengths and took advantage of their opponents weaknesses which is how a football match is won.

    I look forward to seeing how klinsmann balances the talents of ribery, schweiny, podolski, and toni in his bayern side. It looks promising

    The German's coverage was incredible. Its not that he wasn't performing, he just had a swarm on him as soon as he started to control the ball. Even so, CR still was involved in a few chances. His defense was disappointing and was responsible for the Klose header. The German's were able to keep him close and made sure he couldn't run with the ball at pretty much every opportunity.

    I think without that coverage we would have seen a very different game. Everyone knows what he CAN do during a game, but against bigger teams (especially on the international level), a well designed coverage can shut any player down, even CR. I feel that in tournaments such as the Euro Cup, teams have the chance to develop tactics specifically meant to shut down certain players and opponents because unlike at the club level, teams have a single trophy to go after and only a few games to take it. They have to be succinct, tight, patient, and smart to even have a chance at advancing in such a tournament. At the international level, defenses are made up of entirely world class players instead of a mixture with some developing / average players. With this in mind, it comes down to execution. And the German back line and flanks did just that, executed a strategy to swarm Portugal's golden boy. So I don't think he ever had the chance to get going, which is something we have rarely seen during the past few years. I was more surprised about the German's play on both sides of the field more than Ronaldo not playing to his "potential." It was the German's night, and most of football's greats would have met a similar roadblock playing against these German flanks and back line. They had a plan, and it all came down to trapping Ronaldo and frustrating him. I think players like Gomes, Nani, Boswingwa, and Postiga all showed that because of the focus on Ronaldo, other parts of the German's defense were lacking and they paid the price for it...twice.

    I was cheering for Portugal, but they lost and Germans played well. Portugal outplayed them for 20 minutes maybe and Germany had them for the other 70, so yes, Germans won and well deserved.

    lol free headers from set pieces, bad marking against a German front line with Klose, Podolski, Ballack and Sweinsteiger all ready to pounce, the goals are mostly gifted, the Portugist back line just stopped and let Klose and Ballack head home.. not the type of team that should even have gone through the group stage.

    Maybe Ronaldo now realise that he didn't score all the goals and win the medals because of his own ability.. if you're the best player in a crappy team (like this one), don't expect any medals buddy.     oh btw I've said this WAY before, Ronaldo is not the type of player to go back to defend or chase the ball (like Rooney the pitbull). If you notice at every game EVERY game, if he loses the ball he'll just skip around and wait for his teamates to get it. No doubt he's very scary when it comes down to counterattacking, but cmon ! defend big boy, I can't remember seeing him making a tackle on opposing players running towards the goal. For me the team should attack and defend as a team.

    About the incident with Ronaldo.... everybody in here who didn't pay attantion in the replay.... you can clearly see that after Ronaldo fell there was a german player that stepped on his foot... O.K. I know what you are thinking, why did he have to over react as if the german player broke his leg ... well THAT my friends - is a different thing, because there is a diffrence between claming that Ronaldo was acting without any reason, and claming that he over reacts sometimes. Like someone here wrote: in the quarterfinals a player will do anything in order to gain advantage over his opponent(s). In this case Ronaldo was hoping that the Ref will brandish a red card to the german player that fouled him WITHOUT THE BALL. In other case Michael Ballack tried to gain advantage (and unfortunetlly succeeded) over the poor defender that tried to guard him. Ballack pushed the defender and scored the third goal.
    So anyway to sum it all up - open your eyes in the replays and don't rush to wrong conclusions.

    ballack's goal should have not been a goal, and I just told you why.

    Two German push offs should have clearly been called — and would have negated 2 German goals. I ref and play recreational soccer and pushing with the hands is a clear infraction (if the ref sees it.)
    NHL hockey was letting the stick play go for many years but is now at virtually 100% intolerance of hick sticking or hooking. The refs are now calling it by the book and, in my opinion, it has improved the game.
    The same should happen in soccer. The mutual shirt grabbing, pushing and elbowing is amazing.

    The first and third German goals were push offs. In that game, I recall Germany havin' more fouls and playin' really dirty. 1st goal Podolski pushed Boswinga off and then got the ball and did a give and go with Ballack to set up Sweinsteiger. Third goal, in the air, Ballack clearly pushed Chelsea team mate Paulo Ferreira. If you're pushed in the air, your pretty much screwed. Cause once your pushed in the air, it's not like you can move back in the air again to stop the opposition lol. Ballack even looked around for a bit to get away with that goal quickly and then celebrated with arms out.

    Foul play, one of the German players stepped on Ronaldo's foot purposely. Philip Lahm grabbed Deco's foot when Deco was in the air. Ballack did his push off 3rd German goal as was witnessed by the whole stadium!!!!! One of the German defenders also held Nuno Gomes for a good 4-5 seconds in the German box preventing him from getting the ball which was comin to Nuno Gomes. Clear foul and even penalty kick.

    I've seen Germany in the Confederation's Cup push around and boss Tunisia. I've seen Germany do dirty play against Agentina. Injuring Argentina's goalie and then punching one of the Argentinian players after penalty kicks. And then once again, Germany grabbed and pushed Italy in the WC 2006 semi-finals. All of this is fact and is on tape. This show Germany's attitude and style towards football.

    People I love all races and cultures. The thing I beg for most is fair and proper football around the world. People, do not hate football players or any people for that matter. Do not hate C. Ronaldo nor Ballack. People make mistakes.

    However, on that day of Germany vs Portugal. The Germans did indeed play a dirty football game. I wish a true, clean, and deserving winner will hoist the Euro Cup. God bless you all. Thank you.
