Ahem, I believe the result speaks for itself. I'm sure you will come up with about three excuses as to why Italy should have lost, you always do every time Italy wins...
For the record, I don't generally make excuses for my teams when they lose. Did I make excuses for Italy when they lost to France in the first leg of the qualifiers? Did I make excuses when they drew with Lithuania? No. What I DO do is defend my teams from your attacks when they win.
A true mark of sportsmanship is how well someone loses, and I have rarely seen such sportsmanship towards Italy. Everyone complains about how Australia should have won, or France should have won, or Scotland should have won. No one is willing to see that perhaps the decisions that went Italy's way were legit and perhaps Italy didn't always get the decisions they should have gotten. Most people let their personal bias interfere with their judgement, especially when it comes to Italy. I really truly will never understand the hatred towards Italy. I can only hope that in the future, win or lose, people will be gracious towards Italy and respect them for the talented team they are.

Italians deserved to win they had more chances and french were lucky not to give away 4 goals at least thanks to coupet/ goal posts to save 2 goals.
toni was horrible thou and he needs to work on his finishing , but the penalty was the right decision, the tackle was from behind and toni was in a position to score so red card is again the right decision.

Spain plays much better now, but how it will perform against a world-class team? Pirlo and Gattuso are out, Cannavaro also... It should be easy for the Red Furies, but we will see... ;-)

Your insights are as poor as your English. Do you seriously believe that the team that beat the World Champs and the runner up with a three point goal differential in each game is actually going to lose to Russia. With all do respect their meager performance this EC is not going to cut it. As for Holland advancing due to the Czech republic winning good for the Czech republic. That sort of seems inconsequential to the matter at hand. Italy end second in the group with four points and a -1 goal differential. That does not show dominant attacking football. It shows a team worming by on the heels of betters. I was not for France by any means by the way, but at least the French posed some sort of challenge for the Dutch; the Italians just seem befuddled when their counter strategy burst to pieces after the second goal.

as a fan of football in general, I will tell you why the world "hates" italy. I dislike Italy because they have a great team, a lot of talented players and good chemistry, yet time in and time out they choose to sway from their deft passing and good build ups to the inevitable diving and crying, when the truth is they don't need to play this way. The games usually deteriorate into controversial penalties or they play to slow the game to a crawl for the inevitable penalty shoot out. Why is a team with Luca toni, camoranesi, pirlo, cassano etc. doing playing +t=this way? I used to like Italy but my thoughts changed when I saw the last world cup. The italy of old was great and had flair and style. This new "grind it out gain fouls italy" is a true disappointment. As for this game, a red card seemed harsh but a penalty seemed inevitable given the contact. Obviously the red card deflated france but I don't think they played that well anyway. Vamos furia roja!

I did not mean "world" rizki, I think that came out wrong. It was in response to rvg who game the impression that in general Italy was universally disliked. Obviously the whole world does not hate italian football. I just think they should really "play" to their full ability. they barely make it through it seems every time, no team can keep winning like that. Simply because they have good defense doesnt mean they should grind out an entire game. I will admit that it has worked for the past two major tournaments (Greece last Euro and the last WC), but it's been played out. Spain will crush Italy if they don't exploit a good counter attack where we are the weakest. In eithe case we'll probably win, without gattuso and pirlo the midfield will have extreme difficulty in both stopping a build up and attack, as well as creating for the attackers up front. I think Italy is very good but they are now missing their most important pieces (save Buffon and Toni) in Pirlo, Cannavaro and Gattuso (who really is the heart of the team). You guys should get a new manager... to get Italy to play well again.

I can understand that a penalty and a red card is a very heavy punishment, but I dont' agree with you: following what you're saying when there is a fault, the referee could not give a yellow card if he gives also a freekick. I mean, i dont mind that my team loses but at least put up a good fight. Had clichy, sagna, flamini, MEXES, and trezequet been selected and used in matches france may have gotten a win and progressed. Football is a game of luck in some part but a team must take advantage of lucky situations that arise in a game. With that said Italy deserved this win and to advance. The penalty and red card was a no brainer for the ref, the defender gave him no choice, Toni brought the ball down then shielded the defender who had no play on the ball. Allowing the shot and keeping the teams level at 11 would have been the right desicion- Toni probably would have shot wide to the left like he did all game. Henri is fast as hell and creates shots but why does he always mishit the ball he's constantly dinking these sissy rollers to the keeper. Ribery injury was bad luck not a dirty play. Seriously, take a look at Abidal. His feet did not even touch Toni before he fell. Also, if you look his hands, he just touched the body of Toni...no fault here.
I'm a referee since many years and I garanty you that the commentator was wrong. The ref on the field just made a mistake...it's so difficult on the moment.

To respond to the previous question, there are 6 reasons to give a direct free kick (so a penalty if it's in the surface).
In addition, there are 7 reasons to give a yellow card and 7 others for a red cards (refer to the law 12 of the game on fifa.com, also for the free kicks).
The firts reason to give a yellow card is the most ''popular'' one, It is for bad comportments and is often given for one of the 6 reasons for a free kick, and yes it can be given in addition of a free kick.
For a red card, most of the reasons lead to a free kick. In that game, it could have be given because the referee judge Abidal destroy illegaly a real opportunity to score or because that was a brutal fault (such as a tackle from behind).

I just want to comment on the Penalty and the Abidal being sent off. Some of you made a comment saying French got penalized twice for one infraction. Now, that may seem so when one is not too familiar with the rules of the game. What happened there is quite clear to me : First, it was a illegal tackle from behind (Foul) inside the penalty box, which is definately a PK. Next, it is a deliberate foul of "last hope ", which means that there was nobody left in front of the goal( except the goalie) to prevent Toni to prevent having a goalscoring opportunity. This is something that should be "awarded" by a card. Similarly, there are multiple instance in football where you have what you call "getting penalised twice for one infraction." For instance, when a player gets harshly fouled in the middle of the park and the the fouling player gets 1) a free kick awarded against him and 2) a card for the harsh foul. I see the same thing here. The REF did the RIGHT THING, imo. And I am by no means Italian, just a neutral football fan.

I'm not a supporter of any countries.... I just love great football games. Italy doesn't play 'joga bonito' style, but they know how to take opportunities when they have to. And thats their key to success. Football teams play to win, and we watch football for entertainment. Football is contradictory. Hey - I must say that the penalty wasn't really a great call but it would be impossible for the ref to see.
Toni took a dive BEFORE there was any contact. Only after he was falling down did Abidal slide to get the ball away.
Basically, Toni was in mid dive when Abidal made contact. Harsh, but stupid of Abidal as well.

For the record, I don't generally make excuses for my teams when they lose. Did I make excuses for Italy when they lost to France in the first leg of the qualifiers? Did I make excuses when they drew with Lithuania? No. What I DO do is defend my teams from your attacks when they win.
A true mark of sportsmanship is how well someone loses, and I have rarely seen such sportsmanship towards Italy. Everyone complains about how Australia should have won, or France should have won, or Scotland should have won. No one is willing to see that perhaps the decisions that went Italy's way were legit and perhaps Italy didn't always get the decisions they should have gotten. Most people let their personal bias interfere with their judgement, especially when it comes to Italy. I really truly will never understand the hatred towards Italy. I can only hope that in the future, win or lose, people will be gracious towards Italy and respect them for the talented team they are.
Also, I believe it was the French, and not the Italians, the had a lot more dives in this game.

I will admit that it has worked for the past two major tournaments (Greece last Euro and the last WC), but it's been played out. Spain will crush Italy if they don't exploit a good counter attack where we are the weakest. In eithe case we'll probably win, without gattuso and pirlo the midfield will have extreme difficulty in both stopping a build up and attack, as well as creating for the attackers up front.
I think Italy is very good but they are now missing their most important pieces (save Buffon and Toni) in Pirlo, Cannavaro and Gattuso (who really is the heart of the team).

I can understand that a penalty and a red card is a very heavy punishment, but I dont' agree with you: following what you're saying when there is a fault, the referee could not give a yellow card if he gives also a freekick.

The penalty and red card was a no brainer for the ref, the defender gave him no choice, Toni brought the ball down then shielded the defender who had no play on the ball. Allowing the shot and keeping the teams level at 11 would have been the right desicion- Toni probably would have shot wide to the left like he did all game.
