why cannot we understand it is just a game?
the idea of race or the lack of it should never mix with the idea of sport.
To me it is as simple as that.I am italian (blond BTW) from Trieste, a place that is a melting pot of many neighbouring countries.. We speak naturally three languages but never the language of hatred.. I am of course glad that Italy won, but I can see the circumstances that allowed such victory.
All is done, there is no point in attacking each other.
Surely transferring a loss/victory from a sportive ground to a racial one is deminutive to all of us.
My husand is english and, believe it or not, we never argued on sport we keep both flags on top of TV.
Please, let us never lose our dignity, racist comments undermine those who make them, without huring the reciever....they are pointless.

dude, i understand the rules. i explicitly posted that in my first post where i asked the question, so please read and understand the whole thing before answering.

i think the thing is that a PK and RED card (awarding the exceptional goal chance and making them lose a player for the whole game) is what makes the situation unique and thus raises the question.

Hey - I must say that the penalty wasn't really a great call but it would be impossible for the ref to see.

Toni took a dive BEFORE there was any contact. Only after he was falling down did Abidal slide to get the ball away.

Basically, Toni was in mid dive when Abidal made contact. Harsh, but stupid of Abidal as well.

I'm not a supporter of any countries.... I just love great football games. Italy doesn't play 'joga bonito' style, but they know how to take opportunities when they have to. And thats their key to success. Football teams play to win, and we watch football for entertainment. Football is contradictory. The team is judged on the final result of a game and not on some artistic criterias. If you want teams that play for the beauty of the game, then you need to change the way the game is assessed. To count goals does NOT PROMOTE stylish football.

Italy played well and deserved the win, hands down.
France, though in ten men, still played well, yet could not finish in the end.

For all of you who think Italy plays dirty or whatever, wake up!! Find me a recent video of an Italian who dives on the national team. Italians don't dive any more than other teams do, too. So please, give up this retarded act of putting down Italy. Against Holland they played terribly, Romania, a little better, and here, even better. Also, take a look at Toni. He jumped in the air to fall down before any illegal contact.

To respond to the previous question, there are 6 reasons to give a direct free kick (so a penalty if it's in the surface).

In addition, there are 7 reasons to give a yellow card and 7 others for a red cards (refer to the law 12 of the game on fifa.com, also for the free kicks).

The firts reason to give a yellow card is the most ''popular'' one, It is for bad comportments and is often given for one of the 6 reasons for a free kick, and yes it can be given in addition of a free kick.

For a red card, most of the reasons lead to a free kick. In that game, it could have be given because the referee judge Abidal destroy illegaly a real opportunity to score or because that was a brutal fault (such as a tackle from behind).

Seriously, take a look at Abidal. His feet did not even touch Toni before he fell. Also, if you look his hands, he just touched the body of Toni...no fault here.

I'm a referee since many years and I garanty you that the commentator was wrong. The ref on the field just made a mistake...it's so difficult on the moment.

i see what you're saying. it seems like making a team lose a man and give the penalty shot is harsh. i don't know what the solution would be. maybe the yellow and penalty? or just the penalty? that way the rest of the game could be played with 11 v 11 and thus more enjoyable.
