A hotly-disputed Ryan Giggs free-kick gave Manchester United a 1-0 win away to Lille as the match ended in chaos. Giggs's 83rd-minute effort was taken before the referee's whistle, prompting a farcical attempt from Lille to leave the field in protest.

It's actually a shame that Lille was about to boycott the rest of the game.... What a disgrace for our great sport.

With all the comments I've read so far, how come nobody has mentioned Henry doing EXACTLY the same thing? Was there this much of an uproar when that happened? I'm not sure but I think it was against villa. Were people saying "shame on Henry" like another poster above back then? Of course not. There is an unwritten rule in football - "When the ball goes dead, you come alive" and thats what happened last night. Lille committed the foul, why should the ref give them an advantage by waiting for them to set up the wall after that? You're supposed to be punished after a foul, Lille were just punished in the harshest way. Thats football, live with it.

So what did the ref and Giggs say to each other ? 'go on Ryan, take the free kick I know its not a quick one and I know the goalie is still lining up his wall but this will be an easy goal for you.... especially hepful after I've already disallowed one of theirs'
This is disgrace and brings into question the whole legitmacy of the game no wonder Lille wanted to walk off - you're never going to win when you are playing against the referee.

and i'm very sure many teams do play like that once in awhile..
this is at least better than diving for penalty..
you're juz jealous that manchester won.. if it's ur fav team who scored that goal like that; i think u'll be defending him..
PLay d game beautifully with BRAINS too.. !
And yea.. i hate it when they take ages to score free kicks.. many many players including henry lampard have done it b4..

Anybody saying there is a problem with Giggsy's goal don't know nothing bout football, its in the rulebook ya stupid idiots! People all over Europe have been scoring free-kicks like this for years.
There is NO excuse for walking off the pitch during a game, did the england team walk off when Maradonna punched in a goal in the World Cup....NO because we're real men! Bunch of cowards.
I'm going to the 2nd leg at Old Trafford, any Lille fans with a problem then, come find me......
Ps. Big up to 'daniel' and his reply to 'aa' comments. Oh and 'David D' get a life, you sound like a right chump/scouser! ha \:d/

I agree with the comment 16 where the ref is on the MAN U side ...... !!!

Giggs just hammered the goal right in the corner!!!
Literally blew the leather off the ball!!!
give credit where it's deserved!!!
There's no chance in hell that the keeper would have stopped it ready or not.

"BLOWS HIS WHISTLE to inform BOTH SETS OF TEAMS - NOT JUST MAN U SCUM that the game is restarting"
because, COMMENT 16, in that situation the game has actually stopped. As for your stupid comment 16 about the disallowed goal all you have to do is watch the replay, the Lille striker shoves Vidic in order to gain a positional advantage to score. I'm amazed the ref managed to see it but the problem for all the haters is that the camera managed to see it too. If Lille had've scored the same free kick against Man u would i be upset? YES. of course, that is a terrible way to lose a game of such magnitude but i would be upset at van der saar not the referee, and certainly not the other team merely cuz they were paying more attention than my own team decided to.

Lille themselves are at fault for not positioning a player right in front of the ball to prevent a quick kick. Furthermore, the referee showed restraint by not carding, as allowed under the Laws of the Game, the several Lille players who left the field without the "permission of the referee."

never heard of this ask for ten yards rule that Man U fans seem to have conveniently created, but surely the mere fact that Lille had formed a wall tells everyone that Man United were going to take the ten yards.
Does this mean that every time there is a direct free kick in and around the bx the team defending have to wait till the opposition say they want ten yards..... bollox !!! As soon as the wall has formed the time for a quick free kick has passed.
So Comment 22 if the Scum player had been fouled got up and taken the kcik and put it in the net that would have been fine.
This is the referee and Manu U colluding and stetching the rules to gain an advantage. This may not have been so bad had the referee not disallowed the goal earlier
This IS BLATANT CHEATING and the fact that the referee was involved to help makes it even more disgusting
Rather win F*ck all than have to have referees helping the team get results.
Need I remind you about ths Spurs goal that was disallowed because it had supposedly hadn't crossed the line. U Man U fans are g*llible twats The authorities know that Man U without success will drown in a mountain of debt cos all you glory seekers would just disappear.

Even the commentators after the game (ITV1), EX PROFESSIONALS, say that the goal was legit (these people should know more then anybody else) and Lille's manager was out of order trying to take his team off.
I DONT BELIEVE he has never heard that rule bout the 10 yards, I mean everyone who plays football has heard that rule. It has been highlighted in the press over the last few seasons because of Henry.
I would love to know what team this cunt supports, but have a hunch its not the red devils.

All you babies crying over this, go buy a supply of Kleenex.

You keep yerself happy believing that the free kick was legit !!
Basterteille - thanks for the link you have helped to PROVE my point, the Henry goal more than likely stood because the opposition player was still only two yards from the ball, therby making it far more difficult to score and they hadn't retreated the full 10 yards unlike Lille.
I played football for many years and NEVER remember asking the ref for the wall to go ten yards it was just a known fact that's what you do, If you take the kick before the whistle blows the ref will pull the game back.
If you want to take it quick and no one has retreated then fine, but about 5 minutes had passed before Giggs got permission to shoot into an unguarded net
The ref never blew his whistle , Lille had no idea that Giggs wold be allowed to take the kick. Under these circumstances then goalkeepers will never be able to line their wall up as they will be leaving the whole goal empty for someone to stick the ball in the net a la Giggs - cheating red scum
Un*ted have form for getting assistance from the referee which is why I mentioned Spurs or how about 7 minutes injury time or how about Tranaldo diving for pens at Boro and Spurs
Griffo of course the ITV commentators favour Un*ted they've got to keep their customers a la the Man U muppets happy ! They woudln't dare upset their captive brain dead audience.
Can I suggest you all support a proper football, sorry soccer, team rather a buch of corrupt low life cheats from Stretford, Bloody hell, even my beloved MCFC would qualify for the chumps league if we had the referee on our side week in week out.
Oh and lets not even mentione the easiest group and then the easiest draw in this round. You know you've won the argument when people start callingyou a c*nt.
Bye Muppets, hope your ready to jump off - the bandwagon will soon be at an end !
Blue Army !!

I think it is the Red Army who's taking it this year with +45 GD and more to come. Referees' mistakes are your big excuse? common you can do better than that to justify your JEALOUSY...
Blue Army..... never heard of it.....never seen it.... it seems that they are down there, very far far away. It also seems that there are a lot of teams in the EPL that have the refs on their side for the BLUE ARMY to be in this deep shit.

the only reason Chelsea will never score a goal like this is because the other team gets to wait while six chelsea players argue over who gets to take the damn kick in the first place. play as a team you blue whores

"Basterteille - thanks for the link you have helped to PROVE my point, the Henry goal more than likely stood because the opposition player was still only two yards from the ball, therby making it far more difficult to score and they hadn’t retreated the full 10 yards unlike Lille."
What the hell has that got to do with it? The Henry goal stood for the same reason the United goal stood, becuase you don't have to wait for the wall to be set up unless you specifically ask the ref to do so. Why should you? The foul has been committed against you, so why should the team who has committed the foul gain ANY advantage?
I now realise why you can't just see sense - you're a city fan, and therefore hate everything united do.
Yeah united are top of the league, of course their team is uselss, rooney is crap, scholes is crap, OBVIOUSLY the only reason they're on top is because the refs are constantly giving them an advantage [/sarcasm]
Your comments saying that the football experts are only agreeing that the goal is legit to please united fans and keep TV ratings high are laughable. You really, REALLY haven't a clue.

Thought I would also check the official FIFA rules on direct free kicks outside the penalty area just to shut you muppets up once and for all. It states quite clearly that for a direct free kick 'outside the penalty area' then the opposing players MUST be AT LEAST 10 yards from the ball before the ball is 'in play'. The ball is 'in play' when it is kicked and moves.
Therefore if the players are not 'at least' ten yards away then the kick must be retaken. Therefore, if the referee has not ensured the players are ten yards away then he should not have allowed the free kick to be taken.
As it was he flouted the rules and said ' go on Ryan you take it there is an empty net for you to shoot in'
It really is laughable how you make the rules up to make yourselves feel better. Please point me to the rule that says the attacking player must confirm he wants the ball ten yards, if that's the case whats the point of a referee !!?
You lot really are MUPPETS you need the referee to help you beat Lille, quite sad really. The fact that its so blatant tells me all I already suspected about the helping hand Man U continually get from officials.... you're really not that good are you ?

Only fat people get butt hurt when they're proven wrong.
shut up and go fetch me a fiji water.
I guess we should go back in history and erase Henry's whistle less free kick some seasons ago, eh?
Go to hell Lille.

When the ref blows his whistle to indicate that there was a foul, it is the only time he needs to. Unless the team awarded the free kick (in this case United) asks for 10 yards. Giggs did not ask for it so he is allowed to take it when ever he wants.
I respect Tony from comment 46 because he has not allowed his disdain for a team cloud his vision of what is a perfectly and cleverly taken goal. Rules are rules and they should be applied the same to every situation. As much as it pissed me off when Henry scored the quick free kick against Chelsea to tie the game and continue Arsenal's undefeated (I think it was that season and I think the game finished 2-2) season it was a perfectly legal goal.
So David - D use a bit of maturity and suck it up. Besides whether you agree with the goal or not it the ref thought it was legal, UEFA thinks it is legal and the result stands. Beside the reaction of the Lille coaching staff should be of more concern to you as a football fan than the goal. The coach who told the players to get off the pitch should be sacked and any other coach on that bench who supported him.
