  i don't understand the controversy.....GO LOOK UP THE LAWS OF THE GAME!!! once the referee does not instruct the player to wait on the whistle AND he (the ref) walks away it is perfectly legal to take the kick - the opposition's wall is their business - if they want to take 10 mins. to organize it then they pay the price...

  With all the comments I've read so far, how come nobody has mentioned Henry doing EXACTLY the same thing? Was there this much of an uproar when that happened? I'm not sure but I think it was against villa. Were people saying "shame on Henry" like another poster above back then? Of course not. There is an unwritten rule in football - "When the ball goes dead, you come alive" and thats what happened last night. Lille committed the foul, why should the ref give them an advantage by waiting for them to set up the wall after that? You're supposed to be punished after a foul, Lille were just punished in the harshest way. Thats football, live with it.

  Absolute disgrace - if it had been a quick free kick the wall would never have had time to form. As soon as the Lille players think it is a direct free kick they would expect the ref to BLOW HIS WHISTLE to inform BOTH SETS OF TEAMS - NOT JUST MAN U SCUM - that the game is restarting.
  
  So what did the ref and Giggs say to each other ? 'go on Ryan, take the free kick I know its not a quick one and I know the goalie is still lining up his wall but this will be an easy goal for you.... especially hepful after I've already disallowed one of theirs'
  
  This is disgrace and brings into question the whole legitmacy of the game no wonder Lille wanted to walk off - you're never going to win when you are playing against the referee.

  sorry for my essay but people like COMMENT 16 clearly need this spelling out for them. how many times do you see players awarded free kicks deep in their own half and they quickly stop the ball with their hand and knock it on to the next player?? the answer is all the time as they do not have to wait for a whistle from the ref. the only time you have to wait for the whistle other than when the ref directly asks you to is if the ref measures the ten yards between the dead ball and the opposing wall. most refs will do that only when the team thats been awarded the kick asks for the ten yards. so, as for your comment about the game restarting, it never actually stopped, because the ref didn't have to mark the ten yards. anyone who actually PLAYS football knows this, including the Lille goalkeeper. in short, this is merely a quick mental lapse by a professional team. This is actually why you will see some players stand directly in front of a newly awarded free kick in some games, it is so that the other team asks for the ten yards, thus stopping the game. This then gives the defending goalkeeper the time to line up a wall before the ref then

  because, COMMENT 16, in that situation the game has actually stopped.   Definitely a legal goal. When a team taking the free kick asks for 10 yards, the referee will hold the whistle up and point to it clearly so that both teams know play will restart on the whistle. Man U did not ask for 10, and the referee never signaled a restart on the whistle, thus goal stands.
  
  Lille themselves are at fault for not positioning a player right in front of the ball to prevent a quick kick. Furthermore, the referee showed restraint by not carding, as allowed under the Laws of the Game, the several Lille players who left the field without the "permission of the referee."

  I wished Man Utd had won the game differently. Imagine Lille doing the same thing at Old trafford to Man Utd, knowing Sir Alex Fergusson and Man Utd fans, I'm sure the atmosphere will be more electrified compared to what we saw at Lille. Man Utd won already the game, but Man Utd fans need to be at least fair. This game is a beautiful one, we need to avoid this kind of frustration.

  never heard of this ask for ten yards rule that Man U fans seem to have conveniently created, but surely the mere fact that Lille had formed a wall tells everyone that Man United were going to take the ten yards.
  
  Does this mean that every time there is a direct free kick in and around the bx the team defending have to wait till the opposition say they want ten yards..... bollox !!! As soon as the wall has formed the time for a quick free kick has passed.
  
  So Comment 22 if the Scum player had been fouled got up and taken the kcik and put it in the net that would have been fine.

  Even the commentators after the game (ITV1), EX PROFESSIONALS, say that the goal was legit (these people should know more then anybody else) and Lille's manager was out of order trying to take his team off.
  
  I DONT BELIEVE he has never heard that rule bout the 10 yards, I mean everyone who plays football has heard that rule. It has been highlighted in the press over the last few seasons because of Henry.

  I played football for many years and NEVER remember asking the ref for the wall to go ten yards it was just a known fact that's what you do, If you take the kick before the whistle blows the ref will pull the game back.
  
  If you want to take it quick and no one has retreated then fine, but about 5 minutes had passed before Giggs got permission to shoot into an unguarded net
  
  The ref never blew his whistle , Lille had no idea that Giggs wold be allowed to take the kick. Under these circumstances then goalkeepers will never be able to line their wall up as they will be leaving the whole goal empty for someone to stick the ball in the net a la Giggs - cheating red scum

  Much as I hate Man United this was a legal goal. It's pretty basic stuff, if your opponent gets a free kick go and stand in front of the ball. It takes one player to go and stand right in front of the ball. Then the referee has to move you back. If you just mess about with a wall then you're asking for trouble.

  What the hell has that got to do with it? The Henry goal stood for the same reason the United goal stood, becuase you don't have to wait for the wall to be set up unless you specifically ask the ref to do so. Why should you? The foul has been committed against you, so why should the team who has committed the foul gain ANY advantage?
  
  I now realise why you can't just see sense - you're a city fan, and therefore hate everything united do.

  Okay WhaEva so lets take it your right - This MUST be a new rule because I played for 15 years and NEVER got asked 'did I want the wall 10 yards' - That's just what happens and then you wait for the refs to give you permission to take the kick - that is IF it has not been taken quickly ie within seconds not minutes or even thirty seconds. Matt, I was exaggerating to make the point, the clip only shows from when Rooney picks up the ball not from when the foul was committed. Numbskull !
  
  Thought I would also check the official FIFA rules on direct free kicks outside the penalty area just to shut you muppets up once and for all. It states quite clearly that for a direct free kick 'outside the penalty area' then the opposing players MUST be AT LEAST 10 yards from the ball before the ball is 'in play'. The ball is 'in play' when it is kicked and moves.
  
  Therefore if the players are not 'at least' ten yards away then the kick must be retaken. Therefore, if the referee has not ensured the players are ten yards away then he should not have allowed the free kick to be taken.
  
  As it was he flouted the rules and said ' go on Ryan you take it there is an empty net for you to shoot in'
  
  It really is laughable how you make the rules up to make yourselves feel better. Please point me to the rule that says the attacking player must confirm he wants the ball ten yards, if that's the case whats the point of a referee !!?

  it's funny how people who don't know the laws of the game attack man utd and giggs. lille should have forced man utd to ask for 10 by starting their wall closer to the spot of the foul. that would cause the restart to be initiated by a whistle. also, the entire walk-off incident, pathetic. lille should be punished along with the coach/trainer who held on to the football to prevent the game from continuing.
