    UNbelievable! I dont think anyone expected this scoreline! What Holland did today was ridicuous, against the world champions??? Never saw this coming. Total Football at its best! I am at a loss for words, I am so glad I saw this match live, best match of the tournament so far. Italy had a few chances, but just wasnt their day. Well see what they can do in the next match, but congrats to the Dutch. and Wesley Sneijder, man, what a way to celebrate yor birthday!

    By the way, FYI, v Nistelrooy was not offsides.
    A FIFA rule indicates that if a player (pannucci) goes out of bounds, he is still an active player, and therefore would still be considered in play. The goal was legal. Right call. Check it again, Pannucci lies down out of bounds keeping van nistelrooy onside.

    This completely stuffed my fantasy football!:(( I had four Italian and French players. I was banking on Di Natale to be my secret weapon... and yet Italy lost to Netherlands!:d

    You are dead wrong. He was out of play after being knocked down and should NOT have been considered in play.

    ALL of the post game commentaries will say this.

    They were gifted that goal and it broke Italy's morale.

    Actually... the ref really had it in for them. At one point the Dutch had close to 20 fouls vs. 9 yet Italy had the yellow cards.

    Cannavaro's absence really showed, but they shouldn't have lost that badly. Del Piero should have been played from the beginning.

    Pannucci would have been out of play if the ref acknowledged the injury right away (at that point he can only enter the pitch again when the ref says so), but he didn't because it was Pannucci's team mate Buffon who knocked him down in the first place.
    He could have made a difference if he didn't choose to lie down.

    Italy didn't deserve to win but they deserved to score at least. Panucci, Materazzi, Ambrosini and Gattuso shouldn't have started. Why do Italians coaches always go with experienced instead of in-form players? The line should have been - Toni,Del Piero, Camoranesi, Pirlo, De Rossi,Aquliani, Grosso, Barzagli, Chiellini, Zambrotta and Buffon. All credit to Holland thou, they played amazing. Italy need to win both of thei remaining games if they want to proceed.

    Out of play means out of play and he was out of play, not just in the fact that he was on the ground and not moving but he was physically off the pitch.

    In this particular case, the ref either didn't "catch" the offside or didn't care that a player was down and out of play - either way, the goal shouldn't have counted.

    Rmb the funny videos when a goalie rolled a ball on the floor, only for an opponent to come from behind the goal and kick the ball into the net?

    if that guy was not out of play, i couldn't see why pannuci is..

    You are a little confused by the rules. His injury was not acknowledged and thus he was not out of play or still "active". If it was acknowledged pannucci would have had to ask permission from the ref to enter the pitch again, which was not needed in this case.

    It's okay. Never mind I see him now and as the ref hasn't stopped play I agree that technically Nistelrooy is in fact ahead of Pannucci who is still considered active as he hasn't signaled an injury and limped off he just fell out off the field of play after crashing with Buffon. Legitimate goal.

    What is this!!!!??? Italy had so many chances... Their back line couldn't cope with Holland's speed on the counter... Del Piero should have started along with De Rossi too... And i believe that the ref didn't rule out the goal not because he thought Pannuci was playing Van Nistelrooy onside it's just that he thought Van Nistelrooy was level with the two Italian Defs when the shot was taken. I don't think he was so smart to think that Pannuci was causing the goal to be onside...

    Last Euro'04,the Dutch never played at their best,they were easily shut down by the Portuguese..the last World Cup,they didnt qualified...so it must be these year...a long year of waiting...they finally learned to win!! finally play as a team...hopefully they continue what they started..next is France...1 down,2 to go for the elimination...GO Dutch!!!!

    It doesn't matter in the end if the first goal was legitimate or not, Holland where by far the better team and deserved to win. Italy did not play like the world champions that they are.

    Coming from an Australian with a dutch background this was a sweet sweet victory. GO HOLLAND!

    Ok, I get really irritated whenever someone says this. First, Materazzi was sent off unjustly. He committed a foul but it certainly did not deserve a red card. Italy dominated the game when the numbers were even, and Australia is so supremely lucky that they didn't find themselves a goal down earlier in the game. Even after Materazzi was sent off, Australia failed to score. Finally, if you look closely, you will see that Grosso was actually tripped up by the Aussie's arm. Australia lost to a superior team and you just need to get over it.

    Now, I do believe that Holland's first goal should have been disallowed, and that may have changed the momentum of the game, but the Italians simply didn't play today,a nd no one can claim that they don't deserve the victory.

    You guys have to know that dutch team is involved on every so called "classic" games in every tournament it has taken part.
    I hate italian way of playing,mostly dirty,in contrast with holland,denmark on some tournaments,france and brasil.
    only Milan has been spectacular team,but...with Marko Van Basten, Gullit and Reikard.

    I think u guys should chilled its still only the first game for both sides....and the offside situation i think would have demoralized the italians...however i think its debate able about that.... but it seems unfair if the player is out of the field lying down in this case for quite some time that he is counted as in play......i guess its just down to luck sometimes....but anyways....lets see the dutch against the french.....wonder if they can do the same...then only i would say they deserve the credit...still a long way to go

    the dutch were left the soccer world today in great astonishment,but very impressed afterall with their incredibly hinching performance that left then clinching 3 ''B U T S'' against world champions italy......italy never expected this but atleast they gave a ''B O W'' to the master dutches.who gave them their worst defeat ever in european championships.i must admit it was strikingly spectacular,ahhhhhhhh....what classical soccer those boys played!....they made me call it ''S O C C E R M A D E E A S Y'':)>-

    The first goal was offside, no doubt about it.
    The Italian player was not involved in the play and out of the field, this results in a passive offside.
    Toni told the ref to look at the replay and copped a yellow card for it, watch the reaction of the Holland team, they themselves could not believe it.

    I will agree with statements of Italy's defence.
    2 counter attacks' 2 goals.
    Italy Really need to organise there midfield, Perhaps a change in formation.. 442 apposed to 433.

    Please don’t use this game to Judge Euro, Holland played great but by no means will they play the same against a team with a solid defensive lineup!

    Also, Del-Piero and Casano need to be out there more.
    Del-Piero is in form and Lucatoni is overrated.

    The mids are solid, Pirlo again held his ground in the centre.
    Italy needed this wakeup call.

    Spain ALL THE WAY!!!!!

    As an American, I'm really enjoying having Andy Grey as our commentator on ESPN as opposed to the idiots we normally get. He's not dumbing down the broadcast for "new viewers" (as is normally done), and he actually talks about the game.

    It may have been more sporting and within the spirit of the game to consider defender Christian Panucci off the field of play and therefore no longer an active player, but having not received permission from the referee to leave the pitch nor actually injured, Holland’s goal was correctly awarded.

    Van Nistelrooy paid a nervous look towards the assistant when he stabbed the ball past Italian captain Gigi Buffon, but referee expert Julian Carosi’s advice appears to clear up the matter.

    On his website, he states the following in answer to a question over offside interpreation:

    Where should the Assistant Referee place himself to judge for offside in the following instances: A defender’s momentum, takes him out over the goal line but he is not injured.

    “Answer: A player leaving the field of play because of his momentum during play, is not deemed to have left without the Referee’s permission and can therefore re-enter without the Referee’s permission. In this instance, although the defender is off the field of play, (and until he returns to the field of play), he should be deemed to be standing on the goal-line (in the field of play) when considering offside. The Assistant Referee should stand in line with the last opponent on the field of play (which in this case will probably be the defending goalkeeper). When deciding offside in this scenario, the two last defending opponents are the defender who has travelled off the field of play, and the defending player who is nearest to the goal line on the field of play (which in all probability will be the goalkeeper).

    If an uninjured defender purposefully remains off the field in an attempt to place an attacker in an offside position, then that defender should also be deemed to be standing on the goal-line (on the field of play) when considering offside. Trickery of this nature circumvents the spirit of the offside Law.”

    And the ‘Advice to Referees’ booklet, part 11.11, back this up:

    “A defender who leaves the field during the course of play and does not immediately return must still be considered in determining where the second to last defender is for the purpose of judging which attackers are in an offside position. Such a defender is considered to be on the touch line or goal line closest to his off-field position. A defender who leaves the field with the referee’s permission (and who thus requires the referee’s permission to return) is not included in determining offside position.”

    The Italian media won’t be interested in listening, but Peter Fröjdfeldt and his team seem to have got a critical decision absolutely correct - and expect the UEFA Referees’ Committee to corroborate that fact. They are currently in the process of releasing a note supporting the decision made by the Swedish team.

    im not implicating that France will beat holland but its the 2nd round by then most of them would take of in form and be more serious and motivated... im actually in support of italy...i feel its still a long way to go....hard to judge based on one performance....i think italy were also a lil stunned or stale on this first match....like the world cup they bloomed late... lets hope its not too late.... with reference to the top comment (gosh did u watch France play yesterday....even when italy lost i had more fun watching them....it was dull....:) ...even so were u watching the finals in 06....i think ur comments are wat u commented :)

    We Dutch have beaten the vejesus out of those arrogant Italians. Van Bronckhorst, Van Nistelrooy and Sneijder were amazing yesterday. Van Basten knew what he was doing. The Germans thought we would lose big time, but we've taken the absolute lead in this tournament so far.

    Look at the highlights, it looked like Italy had way more chances, missed many easy onces, with the Dutch only really dominating at the end of the 1st half. In saying that, the Italian defence looked pathetic on those 2 counter attacks. They just let the Dutch score?! Why doesnt Holland ever let Clarence SEEDORF play?

    Its hard to deem whether or not a player is infact out of play...I can recall an occasion when a player that was getting treatment on the side of the pitch for a head injury caused by a team mate suddenly ran on and prevented a goal from being scored.

    I guess the right thing to have done was for the holland player to kik the ball out of play when he saw the italian player down in back play, but given that it was an attacking oppotunity I dont imagine that any team would of given away possession and I certanly wouldnt expect italy to do that if they were in that position.

    It was a great game credit where credit is due, holland played well...lets move on and stop the pathetic whinging, because if Italy was good enough they could of come back and drawn or even won the game. They were just out played on the day.

    Apparently -- Ruud Van Nistelrooy was onside, due to the infamous 11th rule.
    FIFA and UEFA have agreed that the goal was totally legal and anyone to say otherwise is just being pig-headed.

    Whyh should France have won? Italy put the ball in the back of the net more and that is all that matters. Sure, maybe the French appeared more dominant, but keep in mind that the Italians had played a more difficult game in the semis than France. Germany, the host nation, was a superior opponant than Portugal, and Italy played Germany for 120 minutes while France played Portugal for 90 minutes. Italy would have been more fatigued than France and that can affect your performance. France didn't score, and Italy won the PSO, fair and square.

    The Dutch only lost to the portugese because that ugly Maniche was crying when the ball was stolen from him with Robben. I was there in Holland when the game was played, there's a real hatred against Maniche. Maniche cries like a baby for everything. Sweden was strong today, but my finale-nominees are Holland, portugal, Germany (if they loose against the dutch, they are broken and humiliated, they make fond of the dutch, even on commercials), and a very suprising, strong Spain.

    If "out of play means out of play".... what happens when a player is dribbling down the line and steps outside?

    Clearly if "out of play means out of play"... he CANNOT touch the ball again OR come back onto the field until the referee allows him to come back in.

    Could we then just have our defenders all jump outside the line, to keep the opposition offsides?

    But wait... that would ruin all arguments against this goal!

    He tumbled outside of the field, by his own player. Nothing dirty went on, he wasn't injured.

    Goal is a goal and Ruud dominates again. :)

    Because he didn't run out of play and decided to stay out of play... he was injured, on the floor and was unable to stand. Therefore, he was OUT OF PLAY.

    Please tell me how Italy "cheated." The only call you can question is the PK against Australia and if you look closely, you would see that the Aussie's arm had made contact with Grosso's leg. The Aussie made no contact with the ball and brought Grosso down. That is a PK. Now, Materazzi was sent off in that same game after an offense that did not deserve a red card. In the final, Malouda dived and got a PK for it. I don't understand how anyone can claim that Italy cheated. You don't want to see the truth because you let your bias affect your judgement. Get over the fact that you lost in the World Cup and accept that Italy won the title fair and square. Stop being a bad sport, that isn't what football is about.

    When a player goes down due to injury, play can continue and usually does if it's in a crucial area.

    If the play had to be stopped due to him being injured, the referee would have blown the whistle when he was originally "injured."

    I'm part dutch and man was i proud to see Holland play total football again; Its been so long since I have seen such a great performance.

    On the offside, for me its offside and Ruud Van Nistelrooy's expression tells me so, he thought it was offside. The referee has made a mistake judging Ruud to be inline with the last 2 defenders and then has used pannucci as an escape goat.

    In my opinion Italy won the world cup by luck, if Zidane wasn't sent off France would have won. Don't even think for a second Italy would have won with him as you couldn't break France down for most of the match and had to revert to winning on penalties.
    The reason your hated so much: You never cease to stop yelling how amazing Italy are just because they won the world cup.

    As a Dutch -Italian its always difficult to choose a side.
    This time (after 30 years) Holland was better but they had a little bit of help with the 1ste goal,most of the referees will dissalow it.
    2 half italy was playing a bit better but damage was already done.
    We could say that Holland scored 2 typical Italian counter goals .
    My predictions Italy is not out yet and If Holland always scores first it will be difficult to beat them because they can keep the ball good however if they come behind it will be difficult for them.

    go learn the rules of football idiot, if hes out of the field (past that white line you see behind the goalie, then its considered offside unless the ref thinks he went outside the line deliberately, which he didnt cuz he was pushed out there by Buffon) so the first goal WAS OFFSIDE which changed the outcome of the match cuz the other 2 goals were very fast counter attacks since italy really needed to score...

    Ok, Holland deserved to win no doubt.
    Italy played one of the worst match ever in our history.
    But we played football against Holland; we tried to win and we've done our match. Why I have to read so many bad comments on Italy ? Why don't you mention teams like Greece (was it footbal or what against Sweden???) or France-Romania and 80% of the matches played during this tournament?

    Why I have lo listen again this boring refrain about our cheating football?

    We won WC2006 playing with 3 attackers. During the semi against Germany Lippi put inside Iaquinta, Del Piero, Gilardino and Toni (4 attackers). Isn't enough?

    Against Holland we played with Toni, DiNatale and Camoranesi as foward in a 4-3-3.

    So stop saying bullshit about Italian Football if you want us to cease reply remembering we are the World Champion

    There is one flaw in your logic, and this is what Dutch fans don't seem to compehend. You keep saying that the rule is there to prevent defenders from simply "stepping off the field." I completely agree with you, however, Panucci did not "step off the field," he was knocked off. The rule includes the word "deliberate" for a reason. If the defender is off the field not of his own accord, than he cannot be expected to assist in defense and therefore cannot be considered "active." This is the case with Panucci. He does not fit into the required description of "deliberately" off the field for a goal to be upheld, and as such, the goal should have been disallowed.

    In any case, it doesn't matter now. I would encourage everyone to stop focusing on this one call and worry about the upcoming games instead.

    i understand your interpretation of "deliberate," but his own teamate knocked him out which i think has to be considered (and the team was punished for his poor play). second, play can continue (and does) if the player is only slightly injured. you can't tell me Panucci had a concusion or something. moreover, if he was officially injured, the referee would have had to let him re-enter the field once play had restarted (from the ensuing kick-off). really, play couldn't stop if a defense just decides to stop playing defense and thus became innactive. that would be ridiculous.

    again, i think the "fair play" rule is most important. we can't penalise the attacking team for the mistake of the defending goalkepper and the defender.

    OK, this is the last one. let's say the defender was knocked out past the line by his keeper and was just on the edge of the line, just off the field. the ball comes flying in towards the striker who's about to deflect it into the goal. BUT, the seemingly injured defender sees this and lurches toward the forward, swinging his leg and is able, while off the field, to just get a touch on the ball as the striker hits it to stop the goal... what do we do? do we penalise the defender for coming back onto the pitch without the official's consent? no. he was active the whole time, no offside, no foul play. we can't penalise one side and not the other.

    There is one flaw in your logic, and this is what Dutch fans don't seem to compehend. You keep saying that the rule is there to prevent defenders from simply "stepping off the field." I completely agree with you, however, Panucci did not "step off the field," he was knocked off. The rule includes the word "deliberate" for a reason. If the defender is off the field not of his own accord, than he cannot be expected to assist in defense and therefore cannot be considered "active." This is the case with Panucci. He does not fit into the required description of "deliberately" off the field for a goal to be upheld, and as such, the goal should have been disallowed.

    i understand your interpretation of "deliberate," but his own teamate knocked him out which i think has to be considered (and the team was punished for his poor play). second, play can continue (and does) if the player is only slightly injured. you can't tell me Panucci had a concusion or something. moreover, if he was officially injured, the referee would have had to let him re-enter the field once play had restarted (from the ensuing kick-off). really, play couldn't stop if a defense just decides to stop playing defense and thus became innactive. that would be ridiculous.

    The defender could have also been faking an injury just to let the referee give Italy a freekick, which he didn't give. This means that the defender is considered in play by the referee, whether he is inside or outside the lines. Because if he was on the ground on the inside of the lines on the goalside of van Nistelrooy, it also wouldn't have been offside. So the interpretation of the situation by the referee plays a role and i think it was the good decision. Italians always fake like this to clear present danger :p Panucci was never really that hurt, he just walked on after the situation was done. And don't forget Buffon(!) hit Panucci, not a Dutch player. So why stop the play for that anyway

    Whether the goal was offside or onside (I think it was on) it was given and nothing else matters. I think the Dutch played great against both Italy and France and I think they stand a good chance of winning the championship. But who knows what'll happen; isn't that the beauty of football?
